In December of last year, the Brazilian electric power distribution company CEMIG was attacked by a virus, affecting the company’s online service to its customers. According to media reports, the attack involved a suspected ransomware virus, and an attempt to hijack a large amount of the company’s data. CEMIG has confirmed that the virus was contained quickly and that the attack caused limited damage, not affecting the company’s supply of electricity or its customers’ information. However, the company was required to temporarily suspend its services through its online app, WhatsApp and SMS.
