In terms of patents

In 2023, 921000 invention patents were granted, marking a year-on-year increase of 15.4. 2.09 million Utility model patents and 638000 design patents have been granted. 65000 patent reexamination cases were closed, and 7700 cases were declared invalid. The CNIPA accepted 74000 PCT international patent applications. Chinese applicants have filed 1814 international applications of design patents through the Hague system. As of the end of 2023, the number of valid invention patents in China was 4.991 million, and the number of high-value invention patents per 10000 people reached 11.8. Except for the Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan regions, the number of valid invention patents was 4.015 million, marking a year-on-year increase of 22.4 and exceeding 4 million for the first time. Among them, the number of high-value invention patents was 1.665 million, accounting for 41.5, marking an increase of 1.1 from that of the previous year.

The average examination period for invention patents has been shortened to 16 months, and the accuracy of case closure has reached 94.2.

In terms of trademarks

4.383 million trademarks were registered throughout the year, 153,000 trademark opposition cases were reviewed. 373,000 trademark review cases were closed, and 6196 international trademark registration applications through the Madrid system were received from Chinese applicants. As of the end of 2023, the number of valid trademark registrations in China was 46.146 million. The number of valid registered trademarks in China (excluding Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan) was 44.047 million, marking a year-on-year increase of 8.4.

The average review period for trademark registration is stabled at 4 months, and the general trademark registration period is stabled at 7 months. The pass rates for trademark review, opposition, and evaluation all reached over 97 in sampling surveys.

In terms of overseas applications

Throughout 2023, Chinese applicants submitted 73812 PCT international patent applications, 1166 international applications of design through the Hague system, and 6196 trademark international registrations through the Madrid system, ranking among the top in the world.

In terms of geographical indications

As of the end of 2023, China has approved a total of 2,508 geographical indication products, registered 7,277 geographical indications as collective trademarks and certification trademarks, and operated a total of 26,000 entities specializing in geographical indication. The annual output value of geographical indication products has exceeded RMB 800 billion.

In terms of integrated circuit layout design

11000 integrated circuit layout design registrations and certificates were issued throughout the year. As of the end of 2023, China has issued a total of 72,000 certificates for integrated circuit layout design.

In addition, as of the end of 2023, the top 3 valid invention patent growth areas in China were information technology management methods, computer technology, and basic communication programs, with growth rates of 59.4, 39.3, and 30.8, respectively, far exceeding the average growth level, empowering and increasing efficiency for the sustained high-quality development of the digital economy.
