The World Intellectual Property Indicators (WIPI) report released by the World Intellectual property Organization (WIPO) reveals that innovators around the world filed 3.4 million patent applications in 2021, with a growth of 3.6% compared to 2020. Asian Offices received 67.6% of the world’s total applications. Resident patent applications see strong growth in 2021 in China (+ 5.5%), the Republic of Korea (+ 2.5 %) and India (+ 5.5%), driving the growth in global patent applications and pushing Asia's share of applications over the 2/3 threshold. Resident patent application activity declined in 2021 in the United States (- 1.2%), Japan (- 1.7%) and Germany (- 3.9%). 

In 2021, China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) received 1.59 million patent applications, a number similar to the combined total of the 12 Offices ranked 2nd to 13th. China was followed by the offices of the United States (591,473), Japan (289,200), the Republic of Korea (237,998) and the European Patent Office (188,778). These five offices together accounted for 85.1% of the world's total applications.
