The Ukrainian IP Office (UANIPIO) has published an Information Dashboard presenting key indicators, statistics, and trends that have shaped Ukraine’s intellectual property landscape in 2024.
General Overview
Throughout the past year, UANIPIO received 31,187 IP applications, including:
- 2,559 applications for inventions
- 3,748 applications for utility models
- 1,059 applications for designs
- 23,817 trademark applications filed under the national procedure.
Additionally, in 2024, one application for a geographical indication and three applications for topographies of semiconductor products were filed.
A detailed analysis of the key indicators for the main categories of IP objects is provided below.
Inventions
Among the 2,559 invention applications filed in 2024:
- 1,155 were submitted under the national procedure
- 1,404 were filed under the PCT procedure
National vs. Foreign Applicants
- Foreign applicants accounted for 62.1% of invention applications, totaling 1,590 filings (1,401 under the PCT procedure and 189 under the national procedure).
- National (Ukrainian) applicants submitted 37.9% of invention applications, totaling 969 filings (3 under the PCT procedure and 966 under the national procedure).
Top Foreign Filers by Country of Origin
The largest number of invention applications from foreign applicants originated from:
- United States – 454 applications (28.5%)
- United Kingdom – 154 applications (9.7%)
- Germany – 144 applications (9.0%)
- Switzerland – 138 applications (8.7%)
- Luxembourg – 73 applications (4.6%)
Other active filing countries included France, China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark.
Utility Models
Among the 3,748 utility model applications filed in 2024:
- 3,683 applications were submitted by national (Ukrainian) applicants.
- 65 applications were filed by foreign applicants, including 2 applications under the PCT procedure.
It is worth noting that the total number of utility model applications increased by 7.0% compared to 2023, primarily due to a higher number of filings from Ukrainian applicants.
Designs
Among the 1,059 design applications filed in 2024:
- 964 applications were submitted by national (Ukrainian) applicants.
- 95 applications were filed by foreign applicants.
Notably, the number of design applications from national applicants increased by 0.6% compared to 2023.
Trademarks
Among trademark applications filed under the national procedure:
- 20,974 applications were filed by Ukrainian applicants.
- 2,843 applications were filed by foreign applicants, marking a 3.3% increase compared to 2023.
Top Foreign Filers by Country of Origin
The largest number of trademark applications filed under the national procedure by foreign applicants originated from:
- United States – 17.7%
- Switzerland – 12.2%
- Cyprus – 11.7%
- China – 7.5%
- United Kingdom – 6.6%
Other active filing countries included Poland, Germany, India, Mauritius, France, the Republic of Korea, Latvia, the UAE, and Japan.
Nice Classification: Most Popular Trademark Classes
The most popular Nice Classification classes with the highest number of applications filed under the national procedure in 2024 include:
- Class 35 – Advertising; business management, organization, and administration; office work.
- Class 41 – Education; training services; entertainment; organization of sports and cultural events.
- Class 05 – Pharmaceutical, medical, and veterinary preparations; hygienic products for medical use; dietary food products and substances for medical or veterinary purposes; baby food products, etc.
Madrid System Filings
In addition to the figures above, it is worth noting that 5,267 trademark applications were filed by foreign applicants under the Madrid System. The top five countries with the highest number of applications designating Ukraine in 2024 through the international route were: China, Germany, France, United States, and Italy.
