Dr Richard Happ is partner of the law firm Luther in Hamburg and co-heads the firm's Complex Dispute Practice Group. He has acted as counsel or arbitrator in cases under DIS, ICC, SCC, UNCITRAL, UK, Swiss and German ad hoc and ICSID rules. He mostly acts in energy-related disputes, including highprofile ICSID cases such as Vattenfall v. Germany (nuclear phase-out) and AET v. Germany (coal phase- out). Dr Happ speaks German and English and has conducted arbitral proceedings in each of these languages.
Dr Happ is a board member of the German Arbitration Institute (DIS), the President of its Arbitration Council and a member of the executive board of the Institute for Transnational Arbitration (ITA). He is the author of numerous publications with respect to international arbitration proceedings between investors and foreign states. Among his publications are two volumes of the “Digest of Awards and Decisions of ICSID Tribunals” (OUP) and a commentary on the 2022 ICSID Arbitration Rules. He has taught international arbitration and investment arbitration at the Universities of Kiel (Germany) and Hamburg.
