John's primary practice involves providing advice to clients on business, insurance and reinsurance matters. He advises insurers, reinsurers, fraternal societies, banks and insurance intermediaries on regulatory compliance, strategic initiatives, obtaining approvals and orders from Canadian federal and provincial insurance regulators and negotiating insurance distribution agreements.
John's practice also focuses on risk management of law firms, in the course of which he conducts professional liability risk management audits for major Canadian law firms.
Prior to forming Walker Sorensen LLP in 2007, John practised on his own, focusing on providing opinion advice to clients on business and insurance and reinsurance matters. Prior to January 2004, John was a partner in the financial services group of McCarthy Tétrault LLP. There, he divided his time between providing opinion advice and working on major Canadian insurance mergers and acquisitions. Before joining McCarthy’s in 1987, John worked for eight years in the insurance and reinsurance industry as a property and casualty insurance broker, a reinsurance broker and a treaty and facultative reinsurance underwriter.
