Description

Our Employment group invites you to our Essential Employment Law HR seminar

Programme

Session 1 - Key recent and future employment law developments

We will review the key employment law developments from the last 12 months and consider what lies ahead in 2018. We plan to cover the following areas:

  • Employment status
  • Employment contracts
  • Equality law
  • Holiday entitlement and pay
  • Whistleblowing
  • TUPE
  • What's on the horizon for 2018?

Session 2 - You have the choice of attending either option A or B

Option A: The GDPR is almost here - what does it mean for HR?

With the GDPR just around the corner, we take stock of what it means for HR practice and offer you our top practical tips to help you going forwards. The session will cover the following areas:

  • Profiling in recruitment
  • Conducting DBS checks
  • Consent and employment contracts
  • Privacy notices
  • New / enhanced employee rights
  • DSARs
  • Data breaches

Option B: Corporate governance and the role of HR

This session will explore why corporate governance is a hot topic (believe it or not!) and take a closer look at the following areas:

  • Directors' duties
  • Board diversity
  • Employee engagement
  • The role of HR at the centre of it all

Session 3 – A case study: bringing the latest unfair dismissal developments to life

In a challenging economic environment, a company decides to undertake a reorganisation involving a radical change in working practices and multi-site redundancies…

How should it deal with the fall out?

  • One senior employee is resistant to the changes and has a persistently negative and obstructive attitude. What's worse is that he has form for behaving like this in the past - but has never been disciplined. What can the business do?
  • A member of HR is tasked with the collective redundancy process. Wrong turns are taken resulting in liability for the company. And the director with overall responsibility for the process failed to intervene to stop the mistakes. Are they both guilty of misconduct worthy of dismissal?
  • Three redundant employees go on to cause major headaches in the redundancy consultation process. What are the learning points?

Our interactive case study will bring you up to speed with the latest case law developments in the dismissal sphere in a lively and thought-provoking way.

Session 4 - Termination payments: are you ready for the new regime?

In April 2018 major changes will be made to the tax treatment of employee termination payments. Crucially, a new concept of "post-employment notice pay" will be introduced making all payments in lieu of notice taxable (whether or not they are made under the terms of the employment contract). In addition, from 6 April 2019, all termination payments above £30,000 will become subject to employer NICs.

This interactive session will illustrate what these changes mean in practice using worked examples and look at what steps you should be taking to prepare for the new regime.
