Amendments to the Safeguard Mechanism Rules have now been released, with significant changes taking effect from 1 July 2023.
The package of changes to the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act, Regulations and Rules will drive Australia’s decarbonisation commitments by:
- imposing declining emission baselines on large industrial emitters;
- introducing arrangements for issuing and using Safeguard Mechanism Credits; and
- firming up reporting obligations, including when a facility exceeds its baseline.
