Berggren Live Radio is our weekly, fast-paced 30-minute program on important intellectual property issues during these strange times. The program is hosted by Berggren’s own Robert Alderson and Mariella Massaro.
On Wednesday, 19 August our special guest will be Warren Thomas, a partner at the US IP firm, Meunier Carlin & Curfman. The entire episode will be devoted to Inter Partes Review (IPR) proceedings in the United States, with a focus on strategic considerations from the point of view of each party involved these proceedings: the patentee and the petitioner. Robert is a partner at Berggren where he is one of a very small number of intellectual property attorneys working at a European IP firm who has a law degree from the United States and is qualified to practice before both the USPTO and EPO.
Prior to moving to Europe almost 9 years ago, he worked in New York as an intellectual property attorney for 14 years, including over 10 years in the intellectual property group of a general practice AmLaw 100 law firm. In his professional capacity, Robert has a great deal of experience in patent prosecution, litigation, licensing, opinion letter-writing, and IP due diligence matters.

Mariella Massaro

Mariella practiced as an IP attorney-at-law in Italy for over 15 years handling IP litigation and transactional matters, including licensing, commercial agreements and anti-counterfeiting programs for iconic design and fashion companies. She also assisted research centers and hi-tech companies on all aspects of intellectual property created through innovation, with a particular focus on the protection of software-based assets with both proprietary and free /open source software.
At Berggren, Mariella coordinates projects and transactions having an international component and helps in developing effective IP strategies in key global markets. She is also part of the Global Business Development team and is head of the Italian and Russian Desks.
Mariella has authored several publications on European IP law. She is also a frequent speaker at international events and workshops on a variety of IP and Privacy issues.
Mariella is fluent in English, Italian and Russian.

Warren’s practice includes a cross-section of intellectual property and technology matters, including IP litigation, prosecution, and transactions. Warren has gained extensive experience as both an intellectual property attorney at one of Atlanta’s largest law firms and as a technology consultant for the world’s fifth largest independent IT and business process services company. He has represented clients in a variety of matters, including preparing preliminary and post-institution responses for patent owners in multiple inter partes review proceedings.
After law school, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Charles A. Pannell, Jr., of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. Warren was also a consultant at CGI Group, Inc., where he built enterprise software, led implementation teams, and worked closely with his clients to translate their business needs into technology solutions.
