• The Rural Utilities Service (RUS) began accepting applications on February 16, 2010, for Broadband Initiatives Program (BIP) money for the second round of funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.   • The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and RUS began accepting applications for funding of projects under the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) and BIP on February 16, 2010. The application period continues through March 15, 2010. In this round, NTIA has approximately $2.6 billion dollars available for BTOP grants, and has allocated $2.35 billion for infrastructure projects. RUS has approximately $2.2 billion for grants for remote rural areas and 50/50 grant/loan combinations for non-remote rural areas for BIP infrastructure projects. NTIA and RUS have developed separate, but complementary, applications for this funding round based upon comments received after the first funding round.   • On March 2, 2010, RUS and NTIA announced that they are extending the deadline for applications for funding of Infrastructure projects under the BIP and the BTOP. Applicants for BIP infrastructure projects now have until March 29, 2010 to file their applications with RUS. Applicants for BTOP’s Comprehensive Community Infrastructure projects have until March 26, 2010 to file their applications with NTIA. Applications for funding under BTOP’s other programs, specifically Public Computer Centers and Sustainable Broadband Adoption, are still due March 15, 2010. More information may be found here.
