An authorisation meeting of the Wonnarua Traditional Custodians will be held on Wednesday 23 September 2015.  The meeting is being held for the Wonnarua people to authorise the filing of two Native Title Determination Applications over the Wonnarua Traditional Custodians claimed areas 3 and 4.

The proposed claimed areas cover Maitland, Dungog, Muswellbrook, Murrurundi, Merriwa, Denman, Singleton and Cessnock and are outlined in the maps below.

Authorisation Meeting

An authorisation meeting must be held before a native title determination application can be lodged with the National Native Title Tribunal for registration.

All Wonnarua people and other Aboriginal persons who believe they have native title rights and interests in the lands and waters of the proposed claim areas are invited to attend and contribute to the filing of the applications.

Point of Interest

As McCullough Robertson has previously covered in an alert on 2 April 2015, a native title claim was filed on behalf of the Plains Clans of the Wonnarua People (PCWP) and registered on the National Title Tribunal (NNTT) register on 16 January 2014.

The proposed areas of claim for which the authorisation meeting is being held on 23 September 2015, are in the same Hunter Valley region as the already registered PCWP claim.

If the applications are successfully lodged by the Wonnarua people for the same claim areas and are accepted by the NNTT for registration, the exclusive and non-exclusive native title rights and interests of both claimant groups must be observed.

For now, we will continue to monitor the progress of the two applications. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like advice on whether your interest may be affected.
