Mr Istia Ahmed of Cambridgeshire admitted four health and safety offences and a charge of perverting the course of justice in respect of a rented property in Huntingdon. An inspection by the HSE in October 2007 discovered 10 defects related to gas appliances, three of which were classed as “immediately dangerous” and three “at risk”. Mr Ahmed was charged with failing to maintain gas appliances, failing to carry out annual safety checks, failing to remove gas appliances from a room used for sleeping and failure to comply with an Improvement Notice requiring safety checks to be carried out. During his mitigation at sentencing, Mr Ahmed instructed his barrister to present a “Landlord Gas Safety Record”. However, this document was subsequently found to be false. Mr Ahmed was imprisoned for 16 months.
