The HSE is launching a new campaign to reduce the number of injuries and deaths caused by workplace transport, after fi nding that one in fi ve workplace accidents are caused by loading and unloading incidents where loads were not properly restrained. Hundreds of spot checks are being carried out in the forthcoming weeks with eight days of spot checks being carried out at various locations in the North West. A similar scheme last year found that 80% of vehicles which were part of the spot checks did not have loads which were suffi ciently restrained. Businesses with vehicles which are found to fail the checks will be faced with a fi ne and/or removal of their vehicle from the road. The campaign will be supported by mail shots to haulers and transport managers and adverts on the radio and in the trade press. Further information on the campaign can be found at: www.hse.gov.uk/loadsafety.
