The French DPA (CNIL) has released the results of a cookie inspection conducted in 2014.

The CNIL made 24 on-site inspections, 27 remote inspections and 2 hearings to assess whether websites were complying with its recommendations (published in 2013).

The CNIL found that the websites did not sufficiently inform web users of the use of cookies nor did they obtain consent before placing cookies on user's devices. Adding to this, all of the websites that did use cookie banners to inform users, placed cookies before the user was able to consent to their use.

Following the inspection, the CNIL has served 20 formal notices requiring the website publishers to abide by French law.
