The European Commission has adopted proposals to increase the existing right to take unpaid parental leave from three to four months per parent, and to extend parental leave rights to workers, as well as employees. The proposals form part of a package of measures from the Commission aimed at improving work-life balance, but will not become binding until agreed by EU national governments. The proposed amendments to the Parental Leave Directive are expected to be agreed by the end of the year, to come into effect by 2011.
