On 25-29 September 2017, the 5th round of EU-Mexico FTA update negotiations took place, and the EU reported that there had been substantive discussions by all 21 working groups. Nevertheless, in mid-October 2017, EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrm noted that 19 of the working groups still have to conclude their work, and that intense work would therefore be needed to reach the goal of reaching political agreement on 95% of the negotiations by the end of the year. Among the outstanding issues at that point were public procurement, sustainable development, investment protection and geographical indications. A controversial issue within the EU was also whether or not to include data flows in the FTA. The 6th round started on 25 November 2017.

Meanwhile, on 13 September 2017, the EP adopted a Resolution on EU political relations with Latin America in which it supports the speedy conclusion of the FTA update.
