In last month’s Medical Update, we reported on the GMC’s recommendation of an induction programme for all new healthcare professionals commencing work in the UK.
Echoing the GMC’s concern, the House of Lords (European Union Committee) has issued a report (Safety First: Mobility of Healthcare Professionals in the EU) urging the UK Government to introduce tests and checks before allowing doctors registered in other EU nations to practise in the UK. The report covers information-sharing between professional bodies and language testing. It details how the implementation of required standards would not cause the UK to breach the Mutual Recognition of Professional Qualifications Directive. The report can be read in full here.
