Following notification from the World Intellectual Property Organisation on the effectiveness of the new version of the International Patent Classification (IPC) system, the Ukrainian version of the new system entered into force on January 1 2013. The State Service of Intellectual Property will ensure that it is applied within the Ukrainian system of IP protection.

Ukraine adheres to the 1971 Strasbourg Agreement on the International Patent Classification. The parties to this agreement have developed a special union and adopted a common classification of patents, author's certificates, utility models and utility certificates for inventions.

The timely adoption of the new version of the IPC system will allow Ukrainian users to conduct international searches of patent documents in order to establish novelty and patentability.
