On April 17, 2013, the Office of Inspector General of the Department of Health and Human Services updated its self-disclosure protocol (SDP). The SDP has been in effect for several years and allows for providers and suppliers to disclose overpayments received from Medicare, Medicaid and other governmental programs. The concept of the SDP is that a provider or supplier who discovers they have received an overpayment from the government will voluntarily disclose the overpayment and, if appropriate, refund the money.
