Over the weekend, Governor Brown signed a stack of bills, including the California Religious Freedom Act of 2012. The law specifically protects religious dress and religious grooming practices. Richard B. Cohen over at the Employment Discrimination Report wrote about it here.
Governor Brown also signed AB 2396, which is getting somewhat less attention. This statute fine tunes the process for hiring infants under one month old. Before you run out and hire a batch of newborns, however, understand that they're only allowed to work in the entertainment industry and only if the court and a board-certified pediatrician approve. The statute changes the stage at which physician approval is required.
Both statutes take effect January 1, 2013. So if you want to hire a newborn under the current version of the statute, there's still time.
