The European Parliament's approval of the new European Commission, originally expected on 26 January 2010, has been delayed for at least two weeks. Following the hearings of each of the candidate Commissioners before the relevant Parliamentary committees, the Bulgarian designate Rumiana Jeleva has withdrawn her candidature as Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs. The Parliament will hold a hearing of the new Bulgarian designate, Kristalina Georgieva, on 3 February. It would appear that all other designates are for now maintaining their candidature. The earliest date on which the Parliament is now expected to approve the entirely new European Commission is 9 February, after which the new Commissioners could assume their functions in a matter of days.
