On 26 May 2017 the Belgian Data Protection Authority ("DPA") published its Annual Activity Report (the "Report") for 2016 setting out its main accomplishments for the previous year. In 2016 the Belgian DPA focused on the GDPR, cloud computing, social fraud, anti-terrorism, and Facebook matters. The Belgian DPA also processed 4,491 requests or complaints, which saw an increase by 299 requests since the preceding year.
On 25 May 2017 the Belgian DPA issued a press release addressing companies’ concerns around GDPR enforcement, stating that it intended to raise awareness and clarify matters. It stated that mediation would be the preferred resolution method and fines would be a last resort in situations where there is no compliance from the data controller.
