A coal-based power plant in Marshalltown, Iowa has been approved. Following the approval, American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity Vice President of Communications Joe Lucas said, "We can use coal, which is essential in providing affordable, reliable electricity to millions of U.S. consumers and a growing domestic economy, and continue to reduce the amount of manmade greenhouse gas in our environment through advanced clean coal technology." The permit will allow Alliant Energy to shut down two older coal-fired power plants that are polluting Iowa at a much higher rate. As part of the approval process increases in biomass and wind power were also agreed upon. The 630 MW plant would be built with enough space to add carbon capture and storage technology.
