On 17 December, Ofcom started a consultation on proposed new procedures for investigating breaches of broadcast licenses; investigating fairness and privacy complaints; and considering statutory sanctions for license breaches. One of the changes Ofcom proposes in order to streamline and speed up its procedures is to remove the Broadcasting Sanctions Committee. Instead of relying on this dedicated body, Ofcom will instead permit delegated staff persons to consider and determine statutory sanctions. Ofcom says “this is consistent with Ofcom’s overall drive to reduce unnecessary complexity of its governance structure.”
