On 27 June 2013, EIOPA launched two consultation papers focused on consumer protection issues. The first consultation relates to online comparison websites for insurance products (aiming to simplify the process for consumers and ensure that good practices are followed). The second relates to knowledge and ability of distributors of insurance products (and aims to promote better supervisory practices in this regard). Comments are invited in both cases until 23 September 2013 and should be provided on the template published by EIOPA. On 28 June 2013, EIOPA issued an opinion on consumer protection issues concerning payment protection insurance (PPI). While acknowledging that PPI services a valid consumer need, EIOPA highlights key problems which have arisen in the context of the provision of PPI (predominantly mis-selling). EIOPA recommends that national competent authorities consider whether action is necessary at national level in their own jurisdiction to address PPI issues and provide EIOPA with feedback within six months.
