The Commission is still approving various EU financial sector State Aid applications. It is also carrying on investigations into some packages, including the Northern Rock aid. It is looking at whether splitting Northern Rock into a “good” bank (which would continue) and a “bad” bank (which would be wound down) can make the bank viable but not unduly distort competition. Neelie Kroes also spoke on the State Aid decisions which will allow viable parts of WestLB’s activities to carry on, and its continuing work on other Landesbanken.
