The Fair Work Amendment (Tackling Job Insecurity) Bill 2012 was introduced to the Australian Federal Government Lower House late last year. The main purpose of the Bill is to establish a process where “insecure” workers in casual or rolling contract employment can move to more “secure” ongoing employment on a part-time or full-time basis. If passed through the Australian Parliament, the Bill will allow eligible employees to ask their employer in writing to move them into more secure employment. If the employer refuses, an application can be made by the employees or the union on their behalf (even in the absence of an employee request) to the Fair Work Commission who may make an order for secure employment.
