Competition authority reverses infringement decision

The TFTC has revoked an infringement decision against Qualcomm and agreed to a settlement.

In an unusual move, the TFTC revoked a decision that it made in 2017 involving the mobile communications chipmaker Qualcomm, and agreed to a settlement with the company instead.

Government watchdog finds TFTC negligent in handling of Qualcomm settlement

Taiwan's highest watchdog body has passed a corrective proposal regarding the settlement reached between Qualcomm and the TFTC.

On 21 May 2019, the Control Yuan, Taiwan's highest watchdog body, passed a corrective proposal regarding the settlement reached between Qualcomm and the TFTC in August 2018. In the settlement reached to resolve Qualcomm's appeal against the TFTC's 2017 decision, Qualcomm had agreed to change its business practices and to make substantial investments in Taiwan. The Control Yuan indicated that the TFTC had demonstrated "major negligence" in handling the settlement.

Ready-mix concrete suppliers fined USD 1.9 million for price-fixing TFTC has imposed fines on five ready-mix concrete suppliers for price-fixing.

In March 2019, the TFTC invited companies from the sand and gravel mining, and ready-mix concrete industry to educate them about the importance of market competition and the prohibition on concerted practices. The TFTC warned that there could be a concerted action when multiple companies increase prices by an unreasonable amount at the same or around the same time. Sticking to its warning, the TFTC imposed fines totaling NTD 60 million (USD 1.9 million) on five ready-mix concrete suppliers for price fixing by announcing similar price increases for customers through written notices.
