The Taiwan Intellectual Property Office (TIPO) executed the “Patent Backlog Reduction Project” in 2012, and concluded totally 52,425 applications, exceeding 50,000 for the first time. This is a significant increase from 36,627 in the year 2011, and the pending applications dramatically reduced to 152,511. In addition, the time of concluding a case reduced from the peak of 47 months to 45.13 months. For 2013, the concluded cases are expected to surpass 60,000 per year, and the time of concluding a case at the end of 2013 will be reduced to less than 43 months. TIPO expected to reduce the number of pending cases to 78,000 in the year 2016, and shorten the average time of concluding a case to approximately 22 months.
