• On February 26, 2013, the U.S. Department of Energy, in coordination with the Federal Smart Grid Task Force, held its first stakeholder meeting on a voluntary code of conduct (VCC) for energy utilities and third parties related to smart grid. The purpose of the meeting was to address the privacy of consumer data. Participants at the meeting outlined utilities’ current and future data protection and privacy concerns, including the nature of smart grid data, who has access to it and for what purposes, and how to inform consumers about the use of their data. In light of these concerns, stakeholders discussed what a VCC should look like, who it should bind, and how it should be enforced. More information regarding the meeting is available here.
