Financial industry trade associations have urged Congress to enact a national data breach law that holds retailers to the same standards for breach notification and data security as financial institutions.  In a letter to lawmakers, the industry groups ‒ which include the American Bankers Association, Consumer Bankers Association, Credit Union National Association, Financial Services Roundtable, Independent Community Bankers of America, National Association of Federal Credit Unions, and The Clearing House ‒ emphasized the current scope of data security regulations governing financial institutions.  They also called for future legislation to supersede inconsistent and conflicting state laws and to apply “to any party with access to important consumer financial information.”
