Just days after receiving a flood of messages concerning a recent change to its Terms of Use, Facebook has reverted back to the version of the TOU that was in effect as of September 23, 2008. The site is taking the unusual step of collaborating with its user base to find a less controversial way of notifying people that, by joining and posting content on the site, users are giving Facebook the authority to share that content with the user's network of friends. This sequence of events has clearly underscored the importance of having a carefully crafted website use policy by demonstrating that the PR repercussions can be significant when the text of such a policy fails to sufficiently convey its meaning to the average website visitor. On a side note, pun haters of the world let out a collective groan as every media outlet in America competed to use the words "about-Face" and "saving Face" in their headlines.
