So now we have it - CABE and the Design Council have confirmed they will merge from 1st April, following an agreement reached by the two bodies and Government. The new organisation will provide a “one-stop shop” for design support and advice to industry, communities, central and local government, encompassing a range of services already provided by both organisations.

I noticed in the property press a few days ago that Wandsworth Council is to set up its own design review panel to oversee schemes coming forward within the Nine Elms development area – which includes Battersea Power Station, New Covent Garden Market and a site for the new US Embassy. Maybe this will be the trend for larger authorities - to establish their own internal procedures, rather than buying in from the Design Council.
