A potential candidate for Democratic Vice President, Virginia Governor Tim Kaine (D) plans to make climate change the main focus at a meeting of the Southern Governors Association (SGA) that is set to begin on August 8. The SGA consists of 16 states, as well as Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. This meeting would be the first time the SGA addresses climate change and ways to limit greenhouse gas emissions. Many southern states, such as Virginia and West Virginia, rely heavily on the coal industry; thus, if the association is able to reach a consensus on some of the climate change issues, it could potentially be the groundwork for a national policy.
