Effective 1 August 2014, changes to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations will change the maximum age for dependents. As of that date, only children 18 or under can be included in an application for a work permit or permanent residence or sponsored as a member of the family class. The exemption for over-age dependents in full-time studies is also being eliminated.
Transitional provisions will ensure that those who have applied before 1 August will continue to be processed in most circumstances, including those who have applied to a provincial nominee program. The cut-off date for other types of applications is also clarified.
These changes will make it critical to apply before any children reach the age of 19. Because applications can take time to prepare, applicants should start well in advance of the 1 August deadline.
