In December 2008, China's State Council announced plans to begin yuan settlement trials with some economies. The program is intended to permit the use of the yuan in trade between Yunnan and Guangxi with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. The Pearl and Yangtze River delta regions would also be permitted to use yuan for settlement for trade with Hong Kong and Macau.
Recently, it has been reported that Hong Kong has been selected to begin trials of a pilot program that allows yuan to be used as the settlement currency in some regional trade. A policy settlement in yuan for trade between Hong Kong and the Mainland is expected to be issued in due course.
