Measures that would reduce the size and the cost of the General Assembly were the subjects of a House State Government Committee on August 9 in Harrisburg. The proposals range from one that would immediately reduce the size of the legislature by 40 percent, and its costs by a corresponding amount, to another that reduces the size more gradually. With 203 House members and 50 Senate members, Pennsylvania has the second largest state legislature. New Hampshire has more state lawmakers but they work part-time. Any legislation to reduce the legislature would amend the state Constitution and would have to be approved in successive legislative sessions
