Following the notification by the Dutch authorities that the municipality of Amsterdam, together with private shareholders, planned to invest in a building of a fibre access network connecting 37,000 households in Amsterdam, the Commission opened a state aid investigation. Complaints were filed with respect to this project by cable operator UPC and VECAI (Dutch branch association of cable operators). To ensure that Amsterdam’s investment has been made under conditions which a private investor would have accepted, the Commission has requested additional information from the Dutch authorities. Interested parties are invited to submit their comments on the proposed measure to the Commission. [21 December 2006]
