The investigation by the European Commission (Commission) into the proposed acquisition of Sunny World by OSRAM has concluded that the merger will not significantly impede competition. OSRAM, a member of the Siemens group, develops, produces and supplies lighting products including energy-saving light bulbs. The Commission found that Sunny World’s business in the energy-saving light bulb sector did overlap with OSRAM’s activities. However, there are a sufficient number of competitors on this market whose supplies would not be affected by this merger. Further, certain manufacturers are looking to expand their production capacity. New entrants on the energy-saving light bulb market in the EU may also come from China thus potentially increasing competition on this market in the future.
