Last week's primary narrowed the field to six candidates running for the top job in Cuyahoga County’s new reorganized charter government. Ed FitzGerald, the mayor of Lakewood, was able to best three other contenders for 49 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary. On the Republican side, former state representative Matt Dolan of Chagrin Falls garnered 68 percent of the vote in his three-way primary. FitzGerald and Dolan will face four other candidates in this fall’s election, with Green Party candidate David Ellison and independents Ken Lanci, Tim McCormak and Don Scipione also vying for the job.
Politically experienced candidates carried the day in the primaries for the County Council seats. Established candidates with name recognition or who hold or have held public office moved forward to November’s general election. Notable winners include: State Senator Dale Miller (D-District 2); former Cleveland city councilman and state legislator Dan Brady (D-District 3); Parma City Council President Chuck Germana (D-District 4); Seven Hills City Council member Peter Draganic (R-District 4); and Richmond Heights Councilwoman Kathryn Gambatese (R-District 11).
