The ten member states of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) are currently planning for the initial auction which will take place in June. The auction will take place 6 months prior to RGGI's official start date of January 2009. Of the ten member states, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont all plan to auction almost all of their allocations. However, Rhode Island, Vermont, Delaware, New Hampshire and Maryland might not be ready for the June auction. Connecticut and New Jersey appear to be on pace to be ready for the auction to go along with Maine, Massachusetts and New York. This auction will allow the United States to gain an idea of the price of a ton of carbon dioxide in a mandatory market.
