From early June 2008 until the end of September 2008, the All China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) plans to carry out activities throughout China to encourage the establishment of trade unions in multinational corporations, particularly in the world’s top 500 enterprises. It aims to establish trade unions in over 80% of multinational corporations by end September 2008 and provide organisational safeguards to protect rights and interests of employees as well as develop harmonious labour relationships.

The rate at which trade unions are being established is seen to be lagging behind the the rate of establishment and development of multinational corporations. With the implementation of the Labour Contract Law, there is seen to be an urgent demand for enterprises to establish strong trade union organisations.
