TransAlta Corporation has announced that it will begin construction of 66-megawatt wind project located on the Gaspé Peninsula. Located in New Richmond, Quebec, the project will deliver power to the grid under a 20-year power purchase agreement with Hydro-Québec Distribution.

The cost of the project is estimated at about $205 million. TransAlta is working with ENERCON for the supply and installation of 33 E82 wind turbines and construction of the associated infrastructure. The project is expected to achieve commercial operation in Q4 2012.

The addition of the New Richmond project will increase TransAlta's wind portfolio to 1,139 MW, according to Steve Snyder, President and CEO.
