The Information Commissioner's Office today (26 August 2011) launched its Student Brand Ambassador Awareness campaign, citing a statistic that 42% of students are concerned that personal information available about them online might affect their future employment prospects. Students at 15 UK universities have been recruited to promote the work of the ICO on campus. The Information Commissioner highlighted the need for students "to protect themselves online from obvious dangers such as identity theft and keeping their social lives private".

Following another recent survey (21 October 2011), the ICO suggests that private sector businesses may be waking up to their obligations under the Data Protection Act 1998 but that "public confidence in how personal data is being handled continues to decline".
