On January 19th, FDIC Chairman Sheila Bair, addressing a summit sponsored by the Mortgage Bankers Association, discussed residential mortgage servicing. To remedy failures in mortgage servicing, Bair wants enforceable requirements that avoid foreclosure. Those requirements include the provision of a single point of contact to assist troubled borrowers throughout the loss-mitigation and foreclosure process and a commitment to adequate staffing and training for effective loss mitigation. Bair also called for the creation of a foreclosure claims commission to provide remedies for borrowers harmed by past practices. Bair Remarks.
