BAA has announced the sale of Gatwick airport in an effort to try and retain control of both Heathrow and Stansted airports, following the Competition Commission's (CC) provisional findings in its investigation of UK airports. The CC had raised a number of competition concerns in its provisional findings and proposed that BAA divest two of its three London-based airports and either Glasgow or Edinburgh airport. Interestingly, British Airways has responded to the CC's consultation into its provisional findings and has suggested that the Civil Aviation Authority be separated into two parts, one dealing with the economic regulation of airports and the other part to be concerned with health and safety. The CC is expected to publish the final report on its investigation into UK airports by March 2009.
