On July 9th, 2019, the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) officially announced that, as of the beginning of the year, China had investigated more than 6,000 legal cases relating to patent infringement. CNIPA also noted 238,000 invention patents were issued at the beginning of the year, its percentage rate estimates 9.9% per year.

At a press conference, the representative of CNIPA, Mr. Hu, shared his vision on invention patents, foreign invention patent applications, and patent protection with journalists. He stated that the amount of invention patents in China was constantly increasing and this allowed the government to fulfill the 13th Five-Year Plan. As for foreign investment patent and trademark applications, Mr. Hu stated that the number of applications for both had increased greatly - 78,000 and 127,000 applications respectively. As a result, China has taken the 3rd place in the number of foreign invention patent applications, just after Japan and the United States of America.

Mr. Ge, an official from CNIPA, expressed his opinion on foreign IPR applications that they directly reflected that the IP protection level and business environment of China would continue to increase. The Director of the IPR Protection and Coordination Department under the CNIPA, Mr. Zhang, announced that CNIPA, under ministries and government agencies’ support, had launched a new law enforcement campaign aimed at strengthening violations against counterfeits, trademarks, patents etc.

Mr. Zhang shared with CNIPA’s future plans. These plans concern with issuing additional documents on IPR protection, strengthening enforcement efforts on patent infringement etc. With these improvements, it is expected that China will continue to create a favourable environment for innovation and business while cooperating with international organizations.
