George Washington University undergraduate resident advisors (RAs) filed a petition with the NLRB seeking a vote on representation by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). If successful, they would become the first RAs at a private college to unionize.

Graduate teaching and research assistants at Columbia University voted 1,602-623 in favor of representation by the United Auto Workers (UAW).

The UAW and IndustriALL requested the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development to intervene in their ongoing efforts to organize 5,000 workers at a Nissan auto plant in Mississippi. The UAW has devoted substantial resources to unionize Nissan’s Mississippi workforce over a period of years, albeit to no avail.

A new independent website,, is targeting workers at select retail and food service outlets in an effort to organize them without the assistance of traditional labor union organizers. The site’s founder contends that traditional unions have failed to effectively assist food and retail employees.
