In late 2012, the Workplace Gender Equality Act 2012 (Cwth) (WGE Act) came into force, replacing the former Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Act 1999 (Cwth). For further information, please see our alert in November 2012 here.
Employers are reminded that for those subject to the reporting requirements under the WGE Act, the current reporting period ends on 31 March 2013.
For this reporting period, employers must report against their workplace program as usual, using the same reporting format as previously. More information on reporting format can be found at the Workplace Gender Equality Agency website by clicking here.
However, employers also need to comply new requirements under the Act to:
- provide access (electronic or otherwise) to the report for employees and shareholders; and
when lodging the report:
- advise employees, shareholders and unions who have members in the workplace that the report has been lodged; and
- advise employees and unions (but not shareholders) that they may make comments on the report, either to the employer or to the Agency.
For reporting periods ending 31 March 2014 onward, the reporting requirements will change more significantly, as you will need to report against gender equality indicators. We will provide further information closer to the end of that reporting period.
