By a vote of 420-3, a bill to protect individuals from discrimination in health insurance and employment based on genetic information, the "Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act" (H.R. 493), passed the House overwhelmingly on April 25. GINA would apply to group health plans, individual health insurers and issuers of Medicare supplemental policies. The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee favorably reported (19-2) a companion bill (S. 358) in late January. The Bush Administration says it supports the legislation.
